You will also see an abundant variety of seabirds, including the Northern fulmar.

Itinerary:

North Spitsbergen: Walrus, Whales and Polar Bears

Actual itineraries will vary depending on local ice and weather conditions. Note Basecamp departure itinerary below (2 days longer)

Day 1 - Arrive in Longyearbyen, capital of the Spitsbergen archipelago. Before embarking the ship, you will have time to walk around this former mining town. We recommend a stop at the Polar Museum, and the parish church, if time allows. In the early evening, we set sail out of Isfjorden. In the mouth of the fjord we are likely to spot minke whales.

Day 2 - We sail to the very pretty fjord called Raudfjord, on the north coast of West Spitsbergen. Here, we are likely to see ringed and bearded seals on ice floes among the impressive glaciers. The cliffs and shoreline of the fjord are full of rich vegetation, and host many rookeries for seabird colonies. Polar bears are often seen in this area.

Day 3 - If the weather allows, we may sail to the mouth of Liefdefjorden and go ashore for a walk on the tundra island of Andøya. Common eiders and pink-footed geese nest in this area, and the rarer king eider is also spotted on occasion. Depending on the weather, we may sail into Liefdefjorden and cruise near the face of the Monaco Glacier, where the waters are a favorite feeding spot for thousands of kittiwakes. Polar bears are sometimes seen on the glacier in this area.

Day 4 - Today we sail into Hinlopen Strait, home to ringed and bearded seals, polar bears, and ivory gulls. We may also see blue whales at the entrance to the straight. We will take full advantage of our Zodiacs to explore the ice floes and bird cliffs of Lomfjordshalvøya and Alkefjellet, where we will see a memorable sight: thousands of Brünnich's guillemots. On the east side of Hinlopenstrait, we'll attempt a landing at Palanderbukta on Nordaustlandet, home to reindeer, pink-footed geese, breeding ivory gulls, and walruses.

Day 5 - We will attempt a landing at Laagoya, where walruses haul-out. Later in the day we will reach our northernmost point at Phippsøya, in the Seven Islands north of Nordaustlandet. We will be just 540 miles from the geographic North Pole, at 81 degrees north. Polar bears and ivory gulls inhabit this region. The ship may sit for several hours in the pack ice, before turning west again.

Day 6 - Retracing our route westward along the pack-ice we will keep watch for polar bears and the elusive bowhead. As we sail along the edge of the continental shelf, we may see fin whales foraging in the upwellings along the the Spitsbergen banks. West of the mouth of the Kongsfjord we have also an excellent chance of spotting humpback whales.

Day 7 - We land at the northern tip of Prins Karls Forland near Fuglehuken. Seabirds nest on the cliffs, and along the coast we see Spitsbergen's only population of harbor seals. This is also where we will encounter relics from an earlier time, in the form of demolished guns and bear traps. At the opposite site of Forlandsundet at Sarstangen is another walrus haul-out. As an alternate route, we may sail into St. Johns Fjord or south to the mouth of Isfjorden and land at Alkhornet. Seabirds nest on the cliffs, Arctic fox search the cliff bases for fallen eggs and chicks, and Spitsbergen Reindeer graze the nutritious vegetation. At nighttime we arrive in Longyearbyen.

Day 8 - We disembark in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, for the flights south to Oslo and ultimately home.
