  Days: 8 to 11

For Arctic wildlife viewing - polar bears, whales, reindeer, seabirds - a Spitsbergen cruise can't be beat. And, the M/S Expedition will take you there in comfort and safety. We offer both 8 day and 11 day cruises aboard Expedition, in a selection of top-of-the-line cabins.

We will make daily landings in this remote archipelago, using the ship as our comfortable base. You will see enormous tidewater glaciers, ancient camps of early whalers and polar explorers, enormous seabird colonies and walrus and polar bears on the polar sea ice.

Spitsbergen, a protectorate of Norway, lies far above the Arctic Circle, only about 600 miles from the North Pole. You'll experience the fabled "Land of the Midnight Sun" - 24 hours of daylight. More time to spend photographing and watching wildlife and the stunning Arctic scenery!

Spitsbergen -- 8-Day Voyage

Realm_of_the_Polar_Bear_SpitsbergenDay 1: Arrive Longyearbyen (D)

Get your first glimpses of the midnight sun in Spitsbergen's capital Longyearbyen. Embark the M/S Expedition in the afternoon and depart Longyearbyen in the evening.

Day 2-7: Svalbard Archipelago / Spitsbergen (6B,6L,6D)

Each day will be planned to take advantage of local ice and weather conditions. Svalbard is one of the few places on the planet to offer such a plethora of natural and historical extravaganzas. We will spend the next six days exploring the remote polar regions. Visit ice covered fjords with breathtaking mountain scenery and glaciers crashing into the sea around us. Spend time steaming through the ice in search of polar bears hunting seals. At one or more of the stops, we hope to see one of Svalbard's species of reindeer. Some years it is possible to sail through the Hinlopen Strait to attempt a circumnavigation of the archipelago early in the season, while other years there is a great deal of ice, which makes it harder to navigate around. We recommend the early tours for those who are keen to see large ice floes and the richest bird life. For those who would rather travel further east with the chance to sail around Spitsbergen, we recommend a tour later in the season. The final itinerary is dependent on ice and weather conditions, which have to be assessed during the voyage.

Day 8: Depart Longyearbyen (B)

We arrive in Longyearbyen in the morning for disembarkation.

Spitsbergen -- 11 Day Voyage

NOTE: Many of the landings shown will be attempted, depending on ice conditions.

Day 2-10: Svalbard Archipelago / Spitsbergen (9B,9L,9D)

Each day will be planned to take advantage of local ice and weather conditions. Svalbard is one of the few places on the planet to offer such a plethora of natural and historical extravaganzas. Cancellation Policy: In the event you must cancel your reservation, refunds will be made according to the following schedule: Deposit is non-refundable but you never loose your deposit on the Expedition. We will forward to the next cruise. 90 to 61 days prior to departure, 50% of total is non-refundable; less than 60 days prior to departure, 100% non-refundable.

Insurance: Because many advance logistical arrangements have been made prior to the running of this trip, we must adhere to the above policy. In light of this, we strongly recommend trip cancellation insurance. An application form will be sent to you upon request, or you may purchase it on your own. Because of the remote location, emergency medical evacuation insurance is required with a $200,000 evacuation minimum. Please check your personal insurance coverage and make sure it is applicable in foreign countries. Emergency medical evacuation insurance is a component of the insurance program IWA offers.
