The look and feel of the wilds of Alaska in South America? Plus world-class food and lodging deep in the wilderness?

Tucked off in the far south of this southern continent, and straddling both Chile and Argentina, Patagonia is home to stunning scenery: massive, craggy peaks, huge glaciers and wind-swept intermountain steppes. In fact, Patagonia has more glaciers than anywhere in the southern hemisphere, outside of Antarctica. The region is sparsely populated – historically most of the settlers were ranchers and farmers, and many of the original families still work the land.

And wildlife is plentiful: visitors can see cougars, Patagonian foxes plus herds of guanacos, a species of llamas. Birdlife includes Magellanic penguins, southern caracara, austral parakeet, flamingos, Andean condors and the ostrich-like Darwin’s rhea, which stands up to 39 inches tall.

In the past, most Patagonia tours were for backpackers and hikers, but now a whole new form of travel has cropped up in recent years aimed at combining adventure travel with outstanding luxury lodges and camps.

Accommodations range from the Singular, a Victorian-era factory that’s been converted to a 57 room hotel incorporating the 19th Century machinery into the architecture, to an authentic estancia (ranch) such as Eolo Lodge, where hiking and horseback riding are favorite activities.

Patagonia Camp, one of the first luxury tented camps in Chile, is reminiscent of some of the best safari camps in Africa, blending with the surrounding environment on the shore of Lago Toro with the famed Paine Massif visible across the lake.

A great way to explore this vast countryside is by your own Jeep Wrangler, with yourself or your guide at the wheel. International Wildlife Adventures offers its Patagonia by Jeep program with weekly guided departures in October through March (the southern summer).

On this 8-day Patagonia tour, a self-guided option is available. You’ll be able to travel at your own pace, stopping to photograph, observe wildlife and hike wherever the whim strikes. At the end of the day, prime luxury lodging and fantastic meals await you. The program is great for families and small groups of friends as well as couples.

On this program, you’ll spend lots of time hiking and discovering the famous Torres del Paine National Park, part of a complex of parks and reserves that straddle both Chile and Argentina. National Geographic Magazine selected Torres del Paine as the 5th most beautiful place in the world. Visit the Perito Moreno glacier either by catamaran across its meltwater lake or strap on crampons and hike across its frozen surface!

Patagonia by Jeep is a perfect add-on to an Antarctica cruise.
