International Wildlife Adventures' Costa Rica Adventures provide you with an excellent cross-section of this wonderfully diverse country. You'll explore the beaches, rainforests and volcanoes, see spectacular wildlife, soak in natural hot springs and dine on fresh, delicious local cuisine.

You'll meet friendly local Costa Ricans, known as "Ticos." Your guides are excellent Tico naturalists, who speak fluent English (often multilingual) and are certified by the Costa Rica Institute of Tourism.

On your Costa Rica Adventure, explore Tortugero National Park by boat where you'll see monkeys, sloths, caimans and a spectrum of tropical birds. In the cool, high cloudforest of Monteverde you can get a birds-eye view from canopy walks and platforms a hundred feet above the forest floor. Photograph the active volcano, Arenal, and soak in natural hot springs at its base. You'll stay in some of the best lodges available in Costa Rica, enjoy excellent cuisine and retire at night to the sounds of the forest.

On arrival in Costa Rica, you will be met by our representative who will transfer you to the Grano de Oro Hotel for your first overnight.

Day 2: San Jose to Tortuguero National Park

Our representative from Laguna Lodge will meet you up in the lobby for your transfer towards the Caribbean lowlands province of Limon. We travel on one of Costa Rica's busiest highways where the views are breathtaking, passing through Braulio Carillo National Park on our way to Guapiles for a breakfast stop.  Dine near beautiful tropical gardens with time to enjoy them before continuing on to Cano Blanco dock to board the boat to Laguna Lodge in Tortuguero. 

When traveling by boat to the lodge, you will spot nurmerous bird varieties along the river and in the canals and you will arrive in time for lunch by the pool. After getting checked into your accommadations, your guide will take you to the village of Tortuguero where you learn the ways of life of the local population.  There will be free time to walk along the coast back to your lodge so you can enjoy the sunset on the beach before dinner.  Overnight: Laguna Lodge, B,L,D.

Day 3: Tortuguero Canals

Wake up with the forest at 6:00 AM. We start the day off with an early morning boat tour in the Toruguero Canals.  Monkeys and birds will be calling for food and marking territories. If we are lucky we might  spot a Jesus Christ Lizard running along the water. We head back in time for an 8:00 AM breakfast. Next stop, our naturalist guide takes you on a combined walk through the forest on to the Mawamba Park to observe the butterfly, frog, iguana farms and garden. After lunch by the pool, a second canal trip is offered into the diverse canal area to spot the jungle wildlife.  In the evening there is an optional night walking tour. Day 4: Tortuguero to La Fortuna/Arenal

Depart after breakfast for the boat trip on the canals back to Cano Blanco dock where we board the bus for the return scenic drive back to Guapiles  for our  lunch stop. After lunch we continue on to Arenal Observatory Lodge. The drive is quite scenic with its winding roads, farms and rural towns with Arenal as the backdrop.

Stop on route for the tour at Danaus Eco Center.  Which is a biological reserve that has developed conservation programs, environmental education training and sustainable use of land production. 

The trails run through a secondary forest where there is a large variety of plants and animals. The main attraction is the butterfly farm with its 30 different varieties.  This protected area is a great place to observe a large variety of birds, especially waterfowl, alligators and iguanas.

The medicinal plant gardens are another attraction with 60 species of medicinal plants along with a nice variety of orchids and heliconia. Two and three-toed sloths, poisonous red frog,  red-eyed tree frog, and more than 150 species of birds are easily observed on this tour.

 Day 5: La Fortuna/Arenal

Enjoy breakfast at the lodge while watching a variety of colorful birds eating at the feeders the lodge sets out. The local lodge guides will meet you for the trip to the fifteen hanging bridges in the 618 acre reserve of primary rainforest where nature is abundant. The scenery at the top of forest canopy will give you the bird's eye view as well as a monkey's perspective of the forest.

In the afternoon and part of the early evening guests will be taken on an easy hike to Arenal Volcano along the base of this marvelous "Mountain of Fire".  After the 2.5 hour hike, a relaxing soak at Tabacon Grand Spa thermal waters in waiting for you, followed by a buffet dinner.  Overnight at Arenal Observatory Lodge, B,L,D.

Days 6:  La Foruna - Monteverde Cloud Forest

After breakfast, we take a tour to Danaus Eco Center which is a biological reserve that has developed conservation programs, environmental education training and sustainable use of land production. 

Lunch at the lodge before boarding a pontoon boat for the crossing of Arenal Lake on our way to Monteverde Cloud Forest.  During the short crossing, keep a look out for migratory birds. On departing the boat, we continue on to Monteverde by bus for the scenic drive arriving 1.5 hours later into the Cloud Forest.

The remainder of the day will be available for familiarizing yourself with the hotel and relax, after few days of activities. Overnight Montana Monteverde, B,L,D

Day 7: Monteverde Cloud Forest:

Breakfast is served early so you can be ready for the arial Sky Tram and Sky Walk above the forest canopy. The tram ends in a wide observation area at the highest point of Monteverde Forest, also called the Continental Divide of waters (The mountain range that divides the waters that goes to the Atlantic or the Pacific). You may stay as long as you wish, admiring the Nicoya Gulf, Arenal volcano, the lake, the mountain range and the cloud forest. 

You may also take a walk with our naturalist guides through the forest and on the Sky Walk. These bridges span the canyons and forest canopy where most of the wildlife in rainforests live. Here we'll spot brilliant tropical bird species and mammals such as monkeys and perhaps sloths.

You can choose between two options to return to the bottom.  The first option is to ride back down on the Sky Tram.  Or you can opt for the more adventurous route back down which is to zip your way to the bottom along the fast moving Sky Trek canopy tour zip lines, a great option for those seeking a rush of adrenaline.

Back to the Lodge for lunch. The afternoon will be a hike to the Sendero Tranquillo in the 210 acre Curicancha Wildlife Refuge where we often spot the beautiful quetzal, along with other species. Overnight Montana Monteverde Hotel B,L,D

Day 8: Monte Verde to San José
We depart after breakfast for the scenic trip back to San Jose with a stop for lunch at the Orchid Botanical Gardens  - worth the stop - then continuing on to Xandari Plantation Hotel.  Xandari Plantation is situated on a coffee plantation overlooking the broad Central Valley. Xandari offers spa treatments, swimming pools, tropical fruit orchards and trails leading to waterfalls, which you will have time to enjoy at your leisure. Overnight at Xandari Plantation, B,L,D.

Day 9: San José / Home
Our representative will meet you at the lobby of the hotel and will drive you to the International Airport, Juan Santamaría to connect with your flight home. B.

Registration: To confirm your space on this tour, please send a deposit of 30% to our office. Balance is due 120 days prior to departure. 

Cancellation Policy: In the event you must cancel your reservation, refunds will be made according to the following schedule: Deposit 30% non-refundable. 90 to 61 days prior to departure, 50% of total is non-refundable; less than 60 days prior to departure, 100% non-refundable.

Insurance: Because many advance logistical arrangements have been made prior to the running of this trip, we must adhere to the above policy. In addition, please be aware that many insurance policies do not cover illness and accident expenses outside of the U.S., and Medicare does NOT cover any such expenses at all. In light of this, we strongly recommend trip cancellation and supplemental insurance.

Grano de Oro Hotel

Converted from a Tropical Victorian mansion, the 40-room hotel maintains the warmth and comfort of a private home.


Hallways lined with period photographs and original art meander through the building and present lush tropical flower arrangements and luxurious plants at every turn. Spanish tile fountains grace intimate atriums, ensuring that one is never far from the soothing melody of falling water. The entire Hotel is non-smoking.

Laguna Lodge (Tortugero)

The lodge is located on a narrow strip of land just minutes away from the extraordinary Tortuguero National Park surrounded by a network of very scenic canals, this is considered one of the most exotic regions of the world, characterized by its rich flora and fauna. The lodge offers 15 acres for 405 bird species, nesting sites for green sea turtles, leatherback turtles, and hawksbill turtles, 160 species of mammals.

Hotel Montana Verde

Arenal Observatory Lodge

The Arenal Volcano Observatory sits in a private nature reserve in the heart of one of Costa Rica's numerous natural areas. Rich volcanic soil supports primary and secondary rainforest. Waterfalls and crystalline rivers offer sparkling jungle refreshment for the soul. A well-marked, manicured trail system provides easy access to the property's breathtaking natural beauty.

A paved wheelchair-accessible trail extends 800 meters into the rainforest; in addition, 7 miles of bicycle, horseback riding and hiking trails wind throughout the volcano lodge's property through rainforest and over a hanging bridge. Just around the bend on every trail is a magnificent new view of the impressive volcano.

The volcano observatory lodge offers daily complimentary walks led by resident naturalist guides.

The Arenal Observatory Lodge features 48 rooms in various buildings spread over the property. Five rooms are fully equipped for disabled travelers, with rooms, bathrooms, hallways, parking areas and even the new swimming pool designed accordingly. Most have a view of the volcano and all overlook verdant gardens. Everywhere you can feel the volcano's commanding presence.

Xandari Resort and Spa
