Day 2
NANTUCKET, Massachusetts
Nantucket is one of the premier destinations along the eastern seaboard, where seaside cottages and old-fashioned lamps still illuminate the streets. Named a National Historic District, the island has retained much of its 17th-century architecture and today nearly 40 percent of the island is protected conservation land. During our full day in Nantucket you may wish to visit the impressive whaling museum, with its skeleton of a 43-foot finback whale; Hadwen House, a grand 19th-century Greek Revival home; or Jethro Coffin House, built in 1696 and the oldest standing building on the island.

Day 3
MARTHA’S VINEYARD
Over a century ago, Martha’s Vineyard was one of the world’s most important whaling centers. Today, its picturesque landscape of fishing villages and beautiful beaches is home to local, summertime, and celebrity residents. Spend the day in Edgartown, an architectural gem of 18th- and 19th-century sea captains’ houses and other historic buildings. Visit the Vincent House, built in 1672 and the oldest residence on Martha’s Vineyard, and the Old Whaling Church, built in 1843 and considered one of New England’s finest examples of Greek Revival architecture. Later, you will have the opportunity to stroll along the harbor or discover the town’s fine boutiques and restaurants.

Day 4
OLD SAYBROOK | ESSEX | OLD SAYBROOK, Connecticut
Visit the quintessential New England towns of Old Saybrook and Essex. Yorktown docks in delightful Old Saybrook, located on the mouth of the Connecticut River. Its streets are lined with Victorian and Colonial houses as well as charming antique shops and art galleries. Later in the afternoon, visit nearby Essex, which has been called “the prettiest town in America.” The first ship of the Continental Navy, the Oliver Cromwell, was built in Essex during the Revolutionary War. Historic New England churches, stone homes, and saltboxes, as well as lovely local shops, are all part of what makes Essex so charming.

Day 5
TARRYTOWN | POCANTICO HILLS | TARRYTOWN, New York
Yorktown enters the Hudson River to arrive in Westchester County. From Tarrytown, travel to Pocantico Hills for an excursion to Kykuit, home to four generations of Rockefellers whose mansion and surrounding grounds is a National Trust for Historic Preservation site. Explore the impressive sculpture garden, with works by David Smith and Henry Moore, and the six-story stone mansion which houses many works of art, including beautiful tapestries by Picasso. Later, visit the Union Church, unassuming and charming upon first glance, but a closer look reveals a gem for art enthusiasts. As requested by the Rockefeller siblings following their mother’s death, Henri Matisse, who was a close friend of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, agreed to create the beautiful stained glass Rose Window as a memorial to the matriarch. The siblings later commissioned Marc Chagall to create a memorial window for their father upon his death. Chagall went on to create eight additional windows for the church, all of which are beautifully displayed today.

Day 6
POUGHKEEPSIE | HYDE PARK | POUGHKEEPSIE
Visit the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, conceived by FDR to house the many historical papers, books, and memorabilia throughout his life. After privately raising funds to build the site, he donated it to the National Archives to ensure that the public would have access to such important historical documents. Also visit Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val-Kill, a National Historic Site. Wander the bucolic grounds and visit the cottage where Eleanor lived until her death. Enjoy lunch at the renowned Culinary Institute of America before continuing to Olana, home of the painter Frederick Church, who belonged to the Hudson River School. The Persian-inspired home was co-designed by Church himself, and the interior has been remarkably preserved. Alternatively, visit the Dia Art Foundation in Beacon, whose works include art from the 1960s to the present. Later, visit the incredible and unique 500-acre sculpture and landscape garden at Storm King Art Center.

Day 7
WEST POINT
Today we’ll visit the United States Military Academy at West Point, whose campus, which consists of many historic sites and monuments, is a designated National Historic Landmark. Sitting upon a hill that overlooks the Hudson River, the expansive grounds at West Point are among the most scenic in the area. We’ll tour many of the sites, including the West Point Museum and there will also be an opportunity to explore the area on your own. In the afternoon, we’ll cross the river for a visit to the Boscobel House and Gardens, among the most exceptional examples of Federalist architecture in the United States. Tour the decorative house, its current art exhibition, and the grounds whose apple orchard will be in its prime upon our visit.

Day 8
NEW YORK CITY | DISEMBARK | FLY HOME
Disembark in New York and transfer to the airport for return flights.

This voyage also operates in the opposite direction from New York City to Providence.

An optional 2-night extension will be offered in New York City.
