Costa Rica Adventure
In planning your Costa Rica adventure, you can't escape the statistics: The Central American country of Costa Rica ranks as one of the top environmentally-friendly countries in the world. The UN Development Program cited its record on environmental sustainability, first in the Americas for the 2010 Environmental Performance Index and first in the first in the Happy Planet Index and is the "greenest" country in the world, according to the New Economics Foundation.
Your Costa Rica adventure won't be all stats, obviously. It's beaches, rainforest, wildlife, stunning active volcanoes and a great choice of excellent parks and lodging. Some 25% of its area is in protected areas, one of the tops in the world. Elevations range from stunning Caribbean and Pacific beaches to 12,000-foot plus mountains with their attendant cloud forests, one of the world's endangered ecosystems. More than 800 bird species are known to exist, four species of monkeys, four of turtles (including the endangered green turtle), five cats and a colorful array of butterflies.
