Gorillas of Rwanda & Wildlife of Kenya's Maasai Mara
|
In the cool, misty highlands of the East African country of Rwanda, live some of the last populations of the rare mountain gorilla. These close ‘cousins’ on the human evolutionary tree exist in small islands of protected habitat in both Rwanda and nearby Uganda. A mountain gorilla safari is the pinnacle of all the wildlife experiences available in Africa - and nowhere is the gorilla viewing better than in the Virunga volcanoes of Rwanda. Volcanoes National Park is situated in the north west of the country, spanning the borders of Zaire and Uganda. These magnificent mountains are one of the last refuges of the mountain gorilla. There are no more than 380 mountain gorillas remaining in the world today, of which 280 live in the Virunga volcanoes. In the past, poaching and habitat destruction have been the main cause for the decline in the gorilla population. However with recent publicity, tourism and education regarding the plight of the mountain gorilla, the authorities have been able to halt this rapid decline. There are four groups of these incredible primates that have been habituated over the last decades and they can be visited with unparalleled viewing opportunities. Visits are limited to exactly one hour and one should expect to hike for two or more hours in search of them. Although gorilla sightings are not guaranteed, our expert guides can usually locate a group for close photography. No visit to East Africa would be complete without a stay in the fabled Maasai Mara, in southern Kenya. Your wildlife safari will begin with a visit to the Mara Reserve. Here, on the northern edge of the great Serengeti ecosystem, you’ll spend four days watching and photographing the vast herds of wildlife that this area is so famous for. In addition to numerous species of antelope, you’ll see zebras, giraffe, cape buffalo, good herds of elephant, as well as ostrich, lions, leopards and cheetahs. Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast or nature photographer, these two incredible wildlife destinations combine to make the trip of a lifetime! |
