Palouse Digital Photo Workshop

Day 1, Saturday, June 20, 2009 - Arrive Pullman, Washington.
Participants should arrange to fly from their home to either Spokane or Pullman, Washington. there are currently two flights per day into Pullman from Seattle. If one of these does not fit your schedule, then you can book into Spokane no later than 4 PM and our staff will pick you up at the airport for the short (1.5 hours) drive to Pullman.

Please be sure you notify our office of your flight schedule.
Nights: Hawthorn Inn.

Days 2-6, Sunday-Friday, June 21-25 - Palouse Area
The next five days will be spent dividing our time between the field, lectures and demonstrations and hands-on digital processing of our photos.

First, a little background about this remarkable area of the country. Nestled between the Cascade Range of Washington and the Rocky Mountains of Idaho, the deep, vast, rolling hills of the Palouse country was created during the Pleistocene when great windstorms deposited glacial debris from Canada over the basalt of the Palouse River country. In places more than 200 feet deep, this soil provides the basis for some of the world’s richest agricultural land.

What matters for photographers is the area’s stunningly beautiful sculpted, rolling landscape. If it’s a normal year, the hills will be a brilliant palette of greens, yellows and purple, punctuated by colorful barns and classically beautiful homesteads.

The Palouse’s barns are a prime attraction for us too. Many of them date back to the 19th Century and are enormous structures of varying styles, including some that are even round! Times are changing and as these barns age, they are often torn down as they are expensive to maintain. Soon most will be gone.

Another attribute of this country: most of the best places to photograph are just a short drive from our hotel. We will spend part of each day, in the morning or afternoon, traveling the backroads and working these scenes with our cameras.

Your leaders, Tim and Wolfgang, will be available to help you, both technically and creatively, to get the best shots possible. Techniques such as determining the best exposure, creative filtration, selective focus and composition will be discussed and demonstrated.

Part of each day will be reserved for  the “digital development” process: downloading the day’s shoot and methods of organizing and handling metadata for your images (so important for organizing and retrieving hundreds and thousands of images).

Tim and Wolfgang will also cover ways to get the best out of your original files, ways of working with RAW, DNG, JPEG and TIFF formats, as well as how to make sure your end result matches your creative vision. Various image editing and storage techniques will also be discussed, including Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, Aperture and others.

We will not cover significantly advanced photo-manipulation/Photoshop techniques, but will help you understand that the best way is to make sure you’ve obtained the best possible original image so that only simple and basic “digital development” is necessary to achieve the best end result.

We’ll also discuss how to create the best output for producing prints, web use and print media.

Each participant should bring his or her own laptop with your favorite image editing and cataloguing programs installed. Also be sure you bring the necessary card readers and cables for your equipment.

Day 7, Saturday, June 26 -  Home
Participants may make arrangements to fly home anytime today.
