Greenland Cruise - Scoresby Sund & Aurora Borealis

Priced from $3,900   Days: 8

This 7 night Greenland cruise offers stunning wildife and scenery along with potentially outstanding aurora viewing.  The trip originates in Iceland, and starts with a scenic drive through the northern part of this geologically fascinating country. From Iceland, you will board the comfortable, expedition class M/V Plancius and begin your cruise.

This voyage includes hiking.  Polar diving available on some departures.

This is a somewhat shorter version of our Northeast Greenland cruise and the itinerary confines itself mainly to the Scoresby Sund region.  For travelers who have more time, we recommend considering our Northeast Greenland Cruise.

To see the region by sailing schooner, we also offer Scoresby Sund Aurora Borealis cruises aboard the Rembrandt van Rijn.

Greenland Cruise: Scoresby Sund & Aurora Borealis

Day 1 -  In the morning, we transfer by bus from our Reykjavik, Iceland hotel to our ship in Akureyri. The trip is about a six hour drive through the unique landscape of North Iceland. In the early evening we set sail, heading north towards the Denmark Strait.

Day 2 - We spend the day at sea, sailing through the Denmark Strait. We are almost guaranteed to see seabirds such as fulmar, kittiwake, gannet and common guillemot. We continue north, crossing the Arctic Circle.  Here we may spot whales. In the evening, the first icebergs appear as we approach the east coast of Greenland near Kap Brewster.

Day 3 - We start the day sailing along the ragged coast known as Volquart Boons Coast. Conditions permitting, we may take a zodiac cruise along one of the glacier fronts, landing near a glacier near one of the glaciers.  Later we land on Danmarksø where we will see the remains of a well-preserved Inuit settlement that was abandoned around 200 years ago. In the evening we sail through the famously beautiful fjords, heading west.

Day 4 - We go ashore at Cape Hofmann Halvø, where we are very likely to see Musk Oxen as well as seabirds. The colors of the arctic flora will have started to change, making the landscape here particularly beautiful this time of year. In the evening we sail through the fjord towards Scoresby Land, marveling at the the contrast between the warm colors of the vegetation on shore set against the looming mountains and brilliant blue icebergs.

Day 5 - As we continue, we make our way to Sydkap in Scoresby Land. As we sail, we will encounter enormous icebergs that can be as tall as 100 meters. We land near Sydkap to view the remains of the Thule culture winter houses, tiny houses that were built using Greenland Whale vertebrae.

Day 6 - In the morning we land at a lagoon at the south coast of Jameson Land where we are likely to spot waders and geese gathering for their autumn migration. In the afternoon we visit Ittoqqortoormiit, the biggest settlement near Scoresby Sund, home to about 400 people. You'll have a chance to stop at the post office to mail your postcards, and you are welcome to explore the town where you will see sled dogs and the drying pelts of seals, musk oxen and polar bears.

Day 7 - This day we spend at sea, giving us excellent opportunities for seeing seabirds migrating as well as whales.  At night will be an excellent opportunity to watch the Aurora borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights.

Day 8 - We return to Akureyri, then transfer by bus back to our hotels in Reykjavik.
