International Wildlife Adventures' Costa Rica Adventures provide you with an excellent cross-section of this wonderfully diverse country. You'll explore the beaches, rainforests and volcanoes, see spectacular wildlife, soak in natural hot springs and dine on fresh, delicious local cuisine.

You'll meet friendly local Costa Ricans, known as "Ticos." Your guides are excellent Tico naturalists, who speak fluent English (often multilingual) and are certified by the Costa Rica Institute of Tourism.

On your Costa Rica Adventure, explore Tortugero National Park by boat where you'll see monkeys, sloths, caimans and a spectrum of tropical birds. In the cool, high cloudforest of Monteverde you can get a birds-eye view from canopy walks and platforms a hundred feet above the forest floor. Photograph the active volcano, Arenal, and soak in natural hot springs at its base. You'll stay in some of the best lodges available in Costa Rica, enjoy excellent cuisine and retire at night to the sounds of the forest.

On arrival in Costa Rica, transfer to the Grano de Oro Hotel or simliar for your first overnight.

Day 2: San Jose to Tortuguero National Park

Transfer to the Caribbean lowlands enjoying breathtaking views, passing through Braulio Carillo National Park on your way to Guapiles for a breakfast stop.  Dine near beautiful tropical gardens before continuing on to Cano Blanco dock to board the boat to Laguna Lodge in Tortuguero. 

Traveling by boat to the lodge, you will spot nurmerous bird varieties along the river and in the canals arriving in time for lunch. Afternoon trip to the village of Tortuguero visitng with the local folks. Walk along the coast back to the lodge to enjoy the sunset on the beach.  Overnight: Laguna Lodge, B,L,D.

Day 3: Tortuguero Canals

Waking up with the forest at 6:00 AM starts the day off before a boat tour in the Toruguero Canals where monkeys and birds will be calling.  You head back in time for breakfast before your guide takes you on a walk through the forest to the Mawamba Park to observe the butterfly, frog, iguana farms and garden. In the afternoon, a second canal trip is offered for more jungle wildlife.  Evening optional night walking tour. Overnight: Laguna Lodge B,L,D

Day 4: Tortuguero to La Fortuna/Arenal

Depart after breakfast for the boat trip on the canals back to Cano Blanco dock where we board the bus for the return scenic drive back to Guapiles  for our  lunch stop. Continue on to Arenal Observatory Lodge enjoying the scenic winding roads, farms and rural towns with Arenal as the backdrop.  Overnight at Arenal Observatory Lodge at the base of Arenal Volcano.  Day 5: La Fortuna/Arenal

Enjoy breakfast at the lodge watching a variety of birds at the feeders. Lodge guides will meet you for the trip to the fifteen hanging bridges in the primary rainforest. The scenery at the top of forest canopy will give you a monkey's perspective of the forest.

In the afternoon and into early evening guests will be taken on an easy 2.5 hour hike to Arenal Volcano along the base of the "Mountain of Fire".  A relaxing soak at Tabacon Grand Spa thermal waters in waiting for you on return, followed by a buffet dinner.  Overnight at Arenal Observatory Lodge, B,L,D.

Days 6:  La Foruna - Monteverde Cloud Forest

After breakfast, we take a tour to Danaus Eco Center which is a biological reserve that has developed conservation programs, environmental education training and sustainable use of land production. 

Trails run through a secondary forest offering a large variety of plants and animals. The main attraction is the butterfly farm with its 30 different varieties.  The medicinal plant gardens offer 60 species of medicinal plants along with a variety of orchids and heliconia. Two and three-toed sloths, poisonous red frog,  red-eyed tree frog, and more than 150 species of birds are easily observed on this tour.

Lunch at the lodge followed by the pontoon boat crossing of Arenal Lake and by bus on to Monteverde Cloud Forest. Overnight Montana Monteverde, B,L,D

Day 7: Monteverde Cloud Forest:

Early breakfast before the arial Sky Tram and Sky Walk above the forest canopy. The tram ends in a wide observation area at the highest point of Monteverde Forest.

Take a walk with the guides through the forest on the Sky Walk where the bridges span the canyons and forest canopy where most of the wildlife in rainforests live spotting tropical bird and monkeys.

You can choose between two options to return to the bottom.  The first option is to ride back down on the Sky Tram or you can opt for the more adventurous, adrenaline zip line route back down.

Return to the Lodge for lunch. The afternoon will be a hike to the Sendero Tranquillo in the 210 acre Curicancha Wildlife Refuge. Overnight Montana Monteverde Hotel B,L,D

Day 8: Monte Verde to San José

We depart after breakfast for the trip back to San Jose with a stop for lunch at the Orchid Botanical Gardens before continuing on to Xandari Plantation Hotel.  Xandari Plantation is a coffee plantation overlooking the broad Central Valley. Xandari offers spa treatments, swimming pools, tropical fruit orchards and trails leading to waterfalls. Overnight at Xandari Plantation, B,L,D.

Day 9: San José / Home

Our representative will meet you for your drive to the International Airport to connect with your flight home. B.

Registration: To confirm your space on this tour, please send a deposit of 30% to our office. Balance is due 120 days prior to departure. 

Cancellation Policy: In the event you must cancel your reservation, refunds will be made according to the following schedule: Deposit 30% non-refundable. 90 to 61 days prior to departure, 50% of total is non-refundable; less than 60 days prior to departure, 100% non-refundable.

Insurance: Because many advance logistical arrangements have been made prior to the running of this trip, we must adhere to the above policy. In addition, please be aware that many insurance policies do not cover illness and accident expenses outside of the U.S., and Medicare does NOT cover any such expenses at all. In light of this, we strongly recommend trip cancellation and supplemental insurance.

Grano de Oro Hotel

Converted from a Tropical Victorian mansion, the 40-room hotel maintains the warmth and comfort of a private home.


Hallways lined with period photographs and original art meander through the building and present lush tropical flower arrangements and luxurious plants at every turn. Spanish tile fountains grace intimate atriums, ensuring that one is never far from the soothing melody of falling water. Laguna Lodge (Tortugero)

The lodge is located on a narrow strip of land just minutes away from the extraordinary Tortuguero National Park surrounded by a network of very scenic canals, this is considered one of the most exotic regions of the world, characterized by its rich flora and fauna. The lodge offers 15 acres for 405 bird species, nesting sites for green sea turtles, leatherback turtles, and hawksbill turtles, 160 species of mammals.

Hotel Montana Verde

The Hotel Montana Verde is located in beautiful Monteverde, famous for its rare and gorgeous cloud forest and friendly community. The climate is refreshing, often referred to as "eternal spring". The views of the Gulf of Nicoya from the hotel's 4,500 foot elevation are spectacular. Monteverde is an ideal destination for relaxing and enjoying the wonders of the tropics. A visit of at least two nights or more in Monteverde is recommended. Arenal Observatory Lodge

The Arenal Volcano Observatory sits in a private nature reserve in the heart of one of Costa Rica's numerous natural areas. Rich volcanic soil supports primary and secondary rainforest. Waterfalls and crystalline rivers offer sparkling jungle refreshment for the soul. A well-marked, manicured trail system provides easy access to the property's breathtaking natural beauty.

A paved wheelchair-accessible trail extends 800 meters into the rainforest; in addition, 7 miles of bicycle, horseback riding and hiking trails wind throughout the volcano lodge's property through rainforest and over a hanging bridge. Just around the bend on every trail is a magnificent new view of the impressive volcano.

The volcano observatory lodge offers daily complimentary walks led by resident naturalist guides.

The Arenal Observatory Lodge features 48 rooms in various buildings spread over the property. Five rooms are fully equipped for disabled travelers, with rooms, bathrooms, hallways, parking areas and even the new swimming pool designed accordingly. Most have a view of the volcano and all overlook verdant gardens. Everywhere you can feel the volcano's commanding presence.

Xandari Resort and Spa

The award winning Xandari Resort and Spa is located in its own tropical paradise on a 40 acre plantation only 20 minutes outside San Jose, Costa Rica.
