Most travelers to Peru are interested in seeing Machu Picchu, the great ancient Inca citadel, re-discovered in the early 20th Century by explorer Hiram Bingham. We offer two options for Machu Picchu tours. This trip, 'The Inca World' gives you the opportunity to see how the ancient Incan communities and the ruins of Machu Picchu are all interconnected.

This tour features a visit to the old Incan city of Cusco, visits to the ruins of Sacsayhuaman and Ollantaytambo, a train ride to explore Machu Picchu, an overnight at Machu Picchu, and a sunrise walk to Door of the Sun.

Itinerary:

The Inca World

Day 1: Arrive Lima

Arrive Lima, transfer to hotel. Your English speaking transfer guide will be waiting for you outside Baggage Claim to take you to your airport hotel. No meals. Overnight Wyndham Costa del Sol, Lima

Day 2: Lima/Cusco area ruins

After breakfast, your transfer guide will escort you to the airport. Fly to Cusco. On arrival in Cusco, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Half day Cusco City tour & main surrounding ruins (private guided)

Guided sightseeing tour of Cusco, the Imperial City and archaeological capital of South America. Visit the city's most important historical monuments: the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral dating from Spanish viceroyalty times, built with great slabs of red granite, the Santo Domingo church built upon the foundations of the Inca temple Koricancha, dedicated to worship the Sun God.

Continue to Cusco City’s surrounding ruins: the Sacsayhuaman Fortress - a ceremonial compound that offers a panoramic view of the city, the Qenqo Amphitheater - a ritualistic site that form an underground maze, Puca Pucara or red fortress and, the Inca Baths of Tambomachay. Day 3: Cusco/Sacred Valley (private guided)

Heading towards the Urubamba Valley, visit Awanacancha, an Andean textile center whose principal objective is to keep Incan textile art alive. Learn about the dyeing techniques and instruments used for hundreds of years in the weaving of these famous textiles. Visit Pisac Markets and interact with the local folk bartering for crafts.

The day will with a visit to the Incan fortress and citadel of Ollantaytambo. This fortress was constructed in order to guard the entrance to this part of the valley and protect it from possible invasions of tribes from the jungle lowlands. B,L Overnight Sonesta Posada Yucay, Sacred Valley

Day 4: Sacred Valley/Machu Picchu (private guided)

Morning transfer to the train station for the scenic train journey to the famous Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu. Enjoy the changing landscape as you travel from Andean highlands to the beginnings of the jungle, arriving at the town of Aguas Calientes. From here, board the bus that will take you on a 20 minute ride up to the citadel of Machu Picchu, or Lost City of the Incas.

A guided tour of the Citadel includes the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sun Dial, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows and various burial grounds. B,L,D Overnight El Mapi Hotel in Aguas Calientes

Day 5: Machu Picchu/Cusco

Rise early and take the first bus to the ruins from Aguas Calientes for a sunrise hike to the Door of the Sun on your own. Spend the day at leisure exploring the ruins with breathtaking views of the Urubamba gorge and surrounding peaks. Return to Cusco on the afternoon train and transfer to your hotel. Day 6: Cusco/Lima

Transfer to airport for flight to Lima, on arrival in Lima transfer to your hotel. Afternoon Lima city tour and Larco Herrera Museum which holds the best private collection of pre-Columbian art in the country. The museum has 45,000 pieces of ceramics, textiles, metal and precious stones.

Continue on to the most important sites in Lima, the "City of Kings." The tour will include Lima's Historical Center, city hall, Plaza San Martin, the Cathedral and Religious Art Museum as well a nice drive along the seaside cliffs overlooking the Pacific. Day 7: Fly Home

Transfer to airport for flight home. B

Not included: International airfare to Peru, air between Lima/Cusco RT, meals not indicated on itinerary, early check in or late check out at hotels, tips, local VAT taxes of !8% -- in order to be exempt you will need to show your passport when asked, drinks during meals, travel insurance which we highly recommend (a quote will be given to you at time of booking), personal items, drinks during meals.

Deposit: 25% per person non-refundable deposit due at time of booking.

Cancellation Policy: Non-refundable balance due 90 days prior to travel dates.

Insurance: Because many advance logistical arrangements have been made prior to the running of this trip, we must adhere to the above policy. In addition, please be aware that many insurance policies do not cover illness and accident expenses outside of the U.S., and Medicare does NOT cover any such expenses at all. In light of this, we strongly recommend trip cancellation and supplemental insurance.
